Description

The Skillbuilders After-School Program helps program young people with special needs to develop and improve in five vital skills areas:

  • Socialization
  • Independence
  • Communication
  • Safety
  • Health

Progress is made through a structured curriculum of community integration outings, educational activities, arts & crafts, technology, and UCPIE’s Be Fit program. The Be Fit program provides healthy choices instruction, healthy snacks, and 30 minutes of adaptive physical play per program day.

This is accomplished through a structured curriculum of: community outings, educational activities, recreation & games, 30 minutes of adapted physical play, safety training, and nutritious after-school snacks. Each site-based program currently accommodates 12 students.

The program provides care to over 60 families in the 5 after school programs and operates twice a week during after-school hours and summer sessions.

Eligibility

  • For children with special needs, including cerebral palsy, autism, down syndrome, intellectual disabilities and epilepsy
  • Participants are eligible from 1st grade up through completion of high school (up through 22yo)
  • Services available in Mecca, Indio, La Quinta, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Springs, and Cathedral City

How to Apply

Call the coordinator at 760-321-8184 ext. 105 for initial brief interview.

If spot is available, Site Supervisor will contact parent. Most sites currently have wait list.

Child will to come in for evaluation to assess skill set and determine goals and objectives. Parent will need to provide IPP and IEP.
